Workshop Details
Intro to Balafon (Friday 2-4 pm)
Learn the basic of balafon playing. African xylophones are so beautiful and rich in their melodies. If you have experience already, this workshop is also worth attending because we will be doing NEW rhythms not covered in previous classes.
Burkina Beats (Friday 6-8 pm)
Music from the cultural cross-roads! Burkina Faso is a small West African country located on the caravan routes. Over the centuries, Burkina music evolved into a style that represents many African traditions. You will learn to play djembe, bass drums, gourd drums & shakers and balafons in the unique style of the legendary group Farafina!
Brazilian Samba (Friday 8-9:30 pm)
How to play Brazilian rhythms on hand drums (djembes work for this, too). We will cover rhythms from the state of Bahia, which is the most "African" part of Brazil. We will cover some valuable technique on hand drums in this workshop as well.
African Xylophone & Drum Ensemble (Sat. 10 am-Noon)
By special request - enjoy learning to play authentic African xylophones. These ancient instruments are the ancestors of the Western concert marimba, and are have a rich tonal quality. In this workshop you will learn a complete piece for both the xylophones and the suppoorting drum ensemble, including an intro, basic patterns, and breaks.
African Bass Drums (Sat. 1-3 pm)
It’s all about the bass drums! Each fitted with it’s own metal bell, you play interlocking parts that combine to form a powerful polyrhythm. Develop your rhythmic independence, timing and stick control in this energizing workshop.
Drumming from Ghana (Sat. 3-4:30 pm)
Learn popular rhythms from the Ashanti, Ga and Ewe people of Ghana, including work with bells and shakers as well as hand and stick drumming. Rhythms from Ghana include Kpanlogo, Fume-Fume, High Life, and Kpacha.
Krin (Log Drums) (Sun. 1:30-3 pm)
Krin are slit drums made of of hollowed logs, played with sticks. They are dynamic and fun to play! Interlocking rhythmic patterns plus a soloist create rich and beautifully melodic rhythms.
Drum Improv Skills (Sun. 3-4:30 pm)
How to look and sound good on your drum! Everyone wants to sound good on their drum – this special workshop will give you insider tips on how to play well in any situation. Exercises for speed, soloing ideas, and how to play djembe with different styles of music!
Burundi Beat (Sun. 6-8 pm)
The Burundi Beat from East Africa is performed on large wooden drums. This form of unified playing from Burundi is very powerful, yet easy to learn. You will learn the basic beat and a series of breaks, along with stops and starts that go with the rhythm.

- The workshops are open to all levels of playing experience.
