Mamady Keita plays Lekule
Lekule is a rhythm of the Geurze people of southern Guinea. It was created by a master percussionist to honour his wife, whose name was Lekule. She was a famous dancer in the region and at the end of very party he dedicated this rhythm to his wife. Her husband was a great percussionist that played a small djembe with several smaller djembes attached to it, each tuned to a different pitch (these drums are called planibala). Mamady Keita taught this rhythm to his students & added breaks and solos.
Here Mamady improvises around the basic rhythm with bass drums played off camera.
